ISDN Equipment Installation Troubleshooting Guide

Your new ISDN phone just arrived and you're so excited. You can't wait to hook it up! So you carefully unpackage it, skim through the user guide, plug it in and...arrrghh! It doesn't work.

The first step in ISDN installation is to verify that the proposed customer premise equipment is compatible with the circuit provisioning. Simple things like knowing the correct protocol (Custom or National Standard) of the circuit can save you time and money. Equipment built with Custom firmware will only work on a Custom circuit. National Standard equipment will only work on a National Standard circuit. Before ordering any ISDN equipment, check with your service provider to identify the protocol and features of the ISDN service you will receive.

After the above simple verifications are made, you should ensure that the circuit is properly provisioned with the services and features required to adequately operate the proposed equipment. If your new equipment is properly connected to the circuit (using the correct interface equipment and cords) and a problem exists, follow this checklist:

Be advised: not having the circuit provisioned properly for the intended equipment and/or not having the correct SPID(s) entered is 99% of the trouble experienced on an ISDN installation. Another major problem encountered is distance limitations. Check the manual supplied with your Network Termination Device(s) to ensure you have the correct Terminating Resistance set for the distance of your wiring scheme.

Information contained on this page and throughout our Web Site is presented to assist in ISDN installation. It is not intended to replace a qualified technician. The very best procedure is to consult with your ISDN service provider and advise them of the equipment type you want to deploy, the features desired and discuss their ISDN service offerings. This ensures a much more pleasant installation.

Note: IDS Technologies neither makes nor implies any guarantee nor warranties the accuracy or usefulness of this information. The reader assumes all risk and responsibility resulting from its use.

For wiring schemes and power arrangements please contact us. These vary from installation to installation and we need to discuss your particular needs before making recommendations.

Below is a quick reference chart listing the current ISDN Ordering Codes used by most Bell Operating Companies in the U.S. Review this chart to ensure that your ISDN circuit is correctly provisioned. For a more detailed review of them or for definitions you should click here: http://www.bellcore.com/NIC/ioc.htm .

For equipment specific ISDN Ordering Codes, see the section farther down on this page entitled Recommended IOCs or click here.
