Lucent Technologies 3A Translators |
Translators
(Not pictured)
Translators are compact, low cost devices that can be easily installed on an equipment
shelf at the customer's
premises or at the local telephone company's central office. The Translators are linked to
the 5ESSŪ Switch via
an ISDN line. They manage various systems for more effective telephone usage on a campus,
business or other
locations.
Types of Translators
Simplified Message Service Interface (SMSI)
Voice messaging is essential to an efficient business operation and a critical link to customers. An efficient Voice messaging System (VMS) can improve customer service and increase revenue potential. It enables you to stay in contact with customers even when you're not available. Equally important, a VMS will reduce the number of busy signals callers receive and allow more than one caller at a time to leave a message.
But a standard VMS does not have the functionality to handle
information coming from today's advanced digital switches. It must have switch protocols
translated into standard SMSI messages in order to process calls. The 3A Simplified
Message Service Interface (SMSI) Translator provides a versatile, user-configurable
interface between an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) Application Processor
Interface (API) connected to an Lucent Technologies 5ESSŪ Switch and a customer provided
electronic voice mail/messaging system (VMS). The 3A SMSI Translator converts the 5ESSŪ
Switch API protocol to the 1A ESS Switch SMSI protocol so that a VMS which was originally
designed to operate on the 1A SMSI format can be used with the 5ESSŪ Switch.
The 3A SMSI Translator allows the customers VMS to send and receive Simplified
Message Service Interface (SMSI) messages when connected to a Lucent Technologies 5ESSŪ
Switch (Software Release 5E4.2 or later). The 3A SMSI Translator receives message service
system (MSS) messages from the 5ESSŪ Switch through the D-channel of an ISDN line.
MDRPlus/Jr (Message
Detail Recording Translator Plus/Jr.)
Working with the 5ESSŪ Switch, the translator provides a
versatile, self-diagnostic interface between the Integrated Services Digital
Network (ISDN) Application Processor Interface (API) line and customer premises-based Call
Accounting Software (CAS). The
Translator receives message data records from the Switch through the API port via the
D-channel of an API line and outputs ASCII
MDR records through the asynchronous port into the premises-based collector. Output format
is compatible with many of the call
accounting software packages available today.
With the MDR, you'll be able to process 10,000 to 20,000 real time records per hour
directly into your call accounting software.
Features and Benefits
MEDS (Micro Electronic Directory System)
The Micro Electronic Directory System (MEDS) works with your Centrex system and the Lucent 5ESS Switch to provide big system functionality at a nominal cost.
It gives you a fully featured internal electronic directory that can speed call completion and increase productivity. MEDS eliminates the cost of publishing paper telephone directories, provides more accurate information more quickly and can be updated instantaneously.
Users query MEDS using either initials or the first few letters of a last name. The system searches the directory database and, once a match is made, displays the number on the Directory Query Display. for ISDN telephones with Autocall, the call can be dialed with one-button convenience.
For in-bound calls, MEDS provides calling name display and shows who is calling even if the call was forwarded from another location.
As many as 8,000 entries, including stations not in the Centrex group, can be included in the MEDS database. Up to 200 directory queries can be handled simultaneously.
BCP/API
The BCPAPI Translator serves as an interface between a 5ESSŪ
Switch and a Lucent Technologies Basic Communications Package (BCP) to deliver MDR and
Traffic Data System (TDS) messages. BCP is a hardware/software package designed to gather
and report information from multiple Centrex and/or PBX switches. The interface to the
5ESSŪ Switch is through an Applications Processor Interface (API). An API is a specially
configured ISDN BRI. The interface to BCP is a standard asynchronous RS-232 data link.
The translator will accept raw MDR and TDS messages from the 5ESSŪ Switch and convert
them to the appropriate BCP format. The formatted messages are then sent to the BCP. In
addition, a special protocol is maintained between the translator and BCP which is used to
monitor the operation of the translator and the API line and allows BCP to have control
over the translator operation.
